Advanced Nanomaterials
Ce.Ri.Col. develops advanced nanomaterials across the entire innovation cycle, from design and synthesis through to characterisation and industrial scale-up. Over the years, the Centre has developed a broad range of stable nanoparticle suspensions, based on simple and complex oxides, metals and alloys, with functional properties including photocatalytic, antibacterial and optically active activity, as well as material performance enhancement.
These include silver-based nanomaterials for antibacterial applications, gold for optically active and biomedical applications, iron oxides for biomedical use and electromagnetic shielding, titanium dioxide for photocatalytic applications, and other functional oxides for improving the mechanical properties of materials.
A representative example is the PARNASOS® line, made up of nanoparticles engineered to ensure high performance and suspension stability, also available at industrial scale and suitable for integration into organic and inorganic matrices for advanced applications.
applications
Nanomaterials for biomedical applications
A distinctive feature of Ce.Ri.Col.’s work is its focus on surface functionalisation and compatibility with different substrates, enabling nanoparticles to be integrated into organic and inorganic matrices while ensuring stability, functional performance and, where required, biocompatibility.
In the field of nanomedicine, Ce.Ri.Col. has built up extensive experience in the development and validation of nanomaterials for biomedical and theranostic applications. Activities include the development of magnetic or optically active systems deliverable via biological carriers, intended for innovative treatments, advanced imaging techniques and therapeutic approaches based on induced hyperthermia.
The Nanomed Division operates in compliance with the ISO 13485 standard for the design and manufacture of medical devices. A dedicated site for biomedical activities is also available, biomediCOL.

Coating
Functional Coatings
The design and development of functional coatings represent one of Ce.Ri.Col.’s most significant application areas, with an impact across several industrial sectors. Using sol-gel technologies, the Centre develops hybrid inorganic–organic materials and polymeric glasses that combine the properties of ceramics and polymers, allowing precise control over the structure, composition and final performance of the coating.
These coatings are applied to metals, glass, ceramics, plastics and other substrates, to create multifunctional surfaces with non-stick, scratch-resistant, anti-oxidation, hydrophobic, easy-to-clean and high-temperature-resistant properties. Among the most significant applications are silver-based antibacterial coatings, used in both the industrial sector and the household appliance and cookware sectors.
This activity covers the entire process, from formulation to functional validation, through to scale-up and support for industrialisation. For further details on products and applications, please refer to the coating section of the Phoebe website.
